Introduction: Each year, the need to think about ways to offer quality of life to this
population grows, as they not only experience significant numerical growth but also
live longer. Increased longevity raises significant concerns, especially regarding aging
with quality of life. Objectives: To address the impacts of institutionalization on the
lives of elderly individuals without family ties; to describe the mental, physical, and
emotional impacts on institutionalized elderly individuals; and to identify the harm
caused by abandonment of healthcare services. Methodology: This study is an
integrative literature review with a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach.
Results: Institutionalized elderly individuals enjoy their homes, but they do not feel at
home, do not feel comfortable, and wish to return home. Conclusion: Nursing plays
an important role in the lives of elderly individuals, being the closest and most constant
people with them, given that visits are limited and brief. The mental health of elderly
individuals is not further complicated by the love, attention, care, and affection offered
by nursing
