The humanization of health professionals is extremely important at the time of birth, and must be influenced and practiced since academic training. Currently, there is still a significant discrepancy between the association of content seen theoretically and when put into practice. The scope of this study is to discuss the performance of nursing student practices in a maternity hospital in the interior of Paraíba: humanization and autonomy of nursing, in order to identify qualities and vulnerabilities of the actions carried out by nursing students, as well as working professionals. The study, of a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory nature, collected information through dialogues with pregnant women present at the Santa Filomena Hospital and Maternity Hospital. Furthermore, the study encompasses a careful analysis of scientific literature, comprising articles, specialized journals and materials in digital resources, with a theoretical basis guided by the assistance provided to parturient women by nursing students. The results indicate a significant gap in certain humanized assistance practices, related to the lack of practices during the course and subsequently, the influence of already implemented assistance. Therefore, it is concluded that there is a need to qualify institutions and strengthen practices, internships and technical visits during academic training, which guarantee an experience even before completing the course, in order to make students more qualified and autonomous.
